Batch 1960 Donates First Half of P500T Pledge to USTHS Scholarship Program
By Bert B. Sulat Jr.
In line with being the Golden Jubilarians of the UST High School Grand Alumni Homecoming (GAH) in February 2010, the members of USTHS Batch 1960 have pledged a total of P500,000.00 as their contribution to the joint scholarship fund of the UST High School and the UST High School Alumni Association Inc.
Of that amount, Batch ’60 turned over a check for P250,000.00 on July 1, 2009. Batch ’60 Girme Gutierrez, also the Chairman of the 2010 GAH, turned over the check to USTHSAAI President Leebai Esquivias-Gamboa.
With this P0.5M pledge, the association is now only P1.5M short from its target P5.0M total consolidated endowment fund for its scholarship program.
Initially established in 2000 and institutionalized in 2008 to cover at least one scholar per year level in the high school, the scholarship fund is generally derived from the accumulated donations of the respective jubilarian batches of the yearly GAHs, as well as from the general revenue of every GAH.
The scholarship fund has naturally become a way of encouraging USTHS alumni of different generations to come together and give back to their alma mater. It is likewise a means to inculcate in the scholars themselves an appreciation for their alma mater that they would ideally maintain once it is their turn to be USTHS alumni.
